Day 6: Thursday May 15th
We left Elkhart Indiana at 7:30 am and traveled north through Michigan and across the Mackinac bridge. This bridge is almost 5 miles and crosses Lake Michigan. It is the seventh longest suspension bridge and longest bridge in the western hemisphere. It opened in 1957 and is undergoing some construction work. Instead of two lanes traveling in each direction it is limited to one lane each way.
The view of the lake was beautiful and you could see white beaches in the distance.
We followed our friends and traveled on Route 2 along the lake.
Everyone needed to stretch their legs and Aussie needed a walk so we stopped in Manistique. You could see a lighthouse in the distance and there is a boardwalk that leads to it. We decided to only walk a short distance because the "midge bugs" were awful! They don't bite but they swarm around your head. Reminds me of Florida's "love bugs".
Tonight we are staying in the Island Casino, Harris MI parking lot. They have a little campground with electric & water but decided to boondock. We have been lucky with the weather. There were tornados and large hail to the south of us but we have just rain for a few hours tonight. Short day tomorrow plus we picked up an hour (central time).
Aussie is having a good time too!
