Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center Day #43

We saw the most amazing animals today: grizzly and black bears, wolves, coyotes, a porcupine, muskox, elk, moose and caribou. Even though they were behind fences it was exciting to see them!

The difference between grizzly and black bears. A grizzly bear not only has a hump in its back, the feet, claws and feet are much larger.

Black Bears

Wolves

Lazy moose laying down to eat willow.

Porcupines
They have about 30,000 quills 3- 12 inches long. They do not shoot the quills, but the quills become detached when it touches an object.

Elk

Reindeer- look at those antlers!

Muskoxen have big hooves and are very shaggy. They live in Alaska, Canada, Greenland and are thought to have been on earth for the last 12.000 years.

If you are ever in Alaska, this is someplace you really want to visit! The animals are allowed to roam freely in very large fenced in areas. The conservatory tries to keep the area close to the animals' natural habitat. I think they have done an amazing job.
